New Innovative Interpretation for Pembroke Castle

In Summer 2014 Hotrod is modernising the interpretation at Pembroke Castle to make medieval history interesting and accessible to a younger audience.
The Trust which owns the site is keen to replicate Hotrod’s success at nearby St Davids Bishops Palace, which now needs a bigger car park for its visitors! Our scheme will use high-impact graphics and to-mobile multimedia to make every part of the castle worth exploring.
A giant (1000m2) map of medieval Wales will show the tides of invasion and insurgency that made the Welsh borders a byword for vicious warfare. Large graphics on the nearby picnic tables will deliver both serious history and more lighthearted touches: think “Owain’s Eleven” – a team of multiskilled medieval siege artists trying to find a way to take this seemingly impregnable castle.
Five magnificent larger-than-life Earls will give their first-hand accounts (via audio points) of Pembroke Castle’s growth from a simple log outpost to a massive stone fortress, a story supported by animated films projected onto the stonework inside the towers.
For visitors interested in the practicalities of castle life, a “Meet the Staff” trail uses free wifi and our City-Insights digital platform to look at the medieval equivalents of caterers, caretakers, security guards, personal assistants and tutors hidden in the twists and turns of the old living quarters. The project is due for completion at the end of September 2014.
